PHILADELPHIA POLICE DEPARTMENT WINS THE 30 TH ANNUAL WEIGHT WATCHERS® BATTLE OF THE BADGES™WEIGHT-LOSS COMPETITION AGAINST THE PHILADELPHIA FIRE DEPARTMENT
PHILADELPHIA (August 10, 2016)…The Philadelphia Police Department has won the 30th Annual Weight Watchers® Battle Of The Badges™ defeating the Philadelphia Fire Department in the country’s longest running weight-loss competition, it was announced today. The overall contest now stands at a virtual tie with 15 wins for each department.
Marilyn Price Brinhak, Founder and President of Weight Watchers of Philadelphia, Inc. says that the Police Department won after 13 weeks of competition by having the highest percentage of weight-loss of its biggest losers. It had a 9.9 percent of weight loss verses the Fire Department’s 9.5 percent of weight loss. In the 2016 competition, the average weight-loss per individual for the 25 biggest losers for the police was 26.87 pounds*, while the Fire Department averaged 23.48 pounds* per individual for its 25 biggest losers. For winning, the Police Department will receive the Battle of the Badges trophy and championship banner which they keep for one year. In addition, Weight Watchers of Philadelphia, Inc. will contribute $10,000 to the Hero Thrill Show, Inc. in the nameof the winning department. Including this year, Weight Watchers will have contributed $257,500 for college scholarships for children of police officers and firefighters killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.
According to John Birnhak, Vice President of Weight Watchers of Philadelphia, Inc., “This year, the Police Department had 416 participants, while the Fire Department entered 154 participants. Both departments lost a combined total of 4,093 pounds. In 30 years of competition, the total weight-loss for both uniformed departments now stands at 192, 214.1 pounds.”
The top individual loser in the Police Department is Anne Loisch, of the Frankford section of the city, the spouse of retired police officer John Loisch, who last served in the second police district. In addition to a $50 award for her individual weight-loss success, she will be given a Keurig Coffee Maker for her husband’s unit. Five other top losers also will be awarded $50 for their individual success from Weight Watchers. They are Brian McCarthy, James O’Connor, Thomas Fournier, Greg Yatcila, and Christine Haney, all of Northeast Philadelphia.
The top individual loser for the Fire Department is Lieutenant Edward Manko, of Northeast Philadelphia, who is assigned to the Fire Marshall’s office at fire headquarters in the Spring Garden section. He also will receive at $50 award and a Keurig Coffee Maker for his unit. Other top losers in the Fire Department who also will be receiving $50 awards are John Redfern of the Fox Chase section, Pedro Carire, of South Philadelphia, and William Barclay, Michael Senski, and Mark Mierzejewski, all of Northeast Philadelphia.
